A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
