Underwhelming The Software Giant's Earnings Report Wipe More Than $70 Billion Off Market Value, Fueling AI Bubble Anxiety.

The tech firm's underwhelming latest earnings have slashed more than $70bn from the value of the enterprise software company established by Trump ally Larry Ellison, intensifying mounting apprehensions of a overheated market in AI-related stocks.

Sharp Stock Fall Comes After Revenue Shortfall

Shares in the firm fell sharply by 11.5% overnight after it disclosed a disappointing 14 percent rise in sales to $16 billion in the previous quarter, while simultaneously disclosed plans to boost its artificial intelligence investment by approximately $15 billion.

The business recorded disappointing three-month sales for the period ending in November, with revenue growth at its key cloud computing business expanding at a slower pace than anticipated, at 34%.

Market Jitters Over Spending and Debt

Shareholders were further disappointed by a slower than expected 68% growth in income from its infrastructure business.

At the same time, investors were alarmed by the company's elevated projections for spending on artificial intelligence. It now expects capital expenditure to jump by 40% to $50bn, with the vast majority of the additional spending allocated for building cloud infrastructure.

This aggressive investment strategy is set against a growing leverage, with Oracle's corporate debt having surged by 25% over the past year to reach $99.9bn.

"Honestly, the earnings release was not dramatically bad, but it served to validate fears around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an unknown timeframe for revenue generation," said a market analyst.

Wider Market Repercussions and Ecosystem Risks

Sustained optimism about the capabilities of AI tech has driven a leap in company valuations in recent months, but there has been a increasing chorus of warnings from policymakers and executives who warn stock market valuations could plummet if the market become let down by the progress or adoption of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important tech player developing software for major corporations worldwide and has in recent years found strength in the cloud sector, there are increasing questions about how reliant firms are growing on mutual investment within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle said that its measure of contractual revenue soared by 440 percent over the last twelve months. However, market watchers were cautious when it was revealed that these commitments were propelled by large deals from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not soothe concerns that the tech sector's AI investments are becoming circular, which makes the sector vulnerable to a loss of market faith," stated a market strategist.

"Overall, strong backlog increase was not enough to alleviate fears about AI and the enormous amount of capital expenditure needed by firms to build AI infrastructure."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Stocks

Other technology stocks also slid in after-hours trading following the Oracle results. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price declined by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares dropped by 0.3 percent.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares plunged by 7.7% on Thursday.
